The Redirect Option

Syntax:

          Option Redirect=address

Description:

The Redirect option tells MAIL8 to redirect your messages and send them on to another address. As an example, suppose user fbaggins is going on vacation. By specifying

          o r=sgamgee

he may have his mail redirected to sgamgee while he is gone. Notifications that would normally be put into the Unread drawer of fbaggins are given to sgamgee instead.

You may redirect messages to a user on your own system, or to a user on a remote system with which you can exchange messages. For example,

          o r=aragorn@rohan.com

redirects your mail to a user on a remote system.

If your mail is being redirected to another mailbox, you are informed of this every time you enter MAIL8 interactively. If you want to stop redirecting your mail, issue the command

          Option R=

with no name specified after the "=" sign.

People sending mail to users who have asked for automatic message redirection receive a notification of the form

Message to USER1 redirected to USER2

when the message is sent. The above notification means that a message was sent to USER1 and automatically redirected to USER2.

In this release of MAIL8, messages may be redirected a maximum of three times. For example, if user1 redirects to user2, user2 redirects to user3, and so on, the message is redirected as

          user1 --> user2 --> user3 --> user4

The message will stop in the mailbox of user4, even if user4 is also redirecting mail. This avoids infinite redirection.

Messages can be redirected to more than one person. For example, if you specify

          Option Redirect="user1 user2"

all messages sent to your userid are redirected to both user1 and user2. You can redirect to any number of users in this way.

MAIL8 attempts to prevent redirection loops (i.e. redirecting from A to B and back to A). If you try to set up such a loop, you receive an error message.

The names specified with this option can be aliases as well as true addresses. When you issue the Option Redirect command, MAIL8 checks the redirection address to see if it contains any of your personal aliases; if so, they are replaced immediately. Thus if you have set up your own alias of

          joe jsmith

redirecting to joe has the effect of redirecting to jsmith. When a mail message is actually received and redirected, MAIL8 checks the redirection address for system aliases and replaces them if present. Thus personal aliases apply when you set up your mailbox for redirection; system aliases apply when the redirection actually takes place.

We recommend that as soon as you set this option, you send a message to yourself to make sure that your mail is properly redirected.
