In TSS, an EXTRN reference to ".get" loads a version of ACC.FIL which does a CALLSS to the file accessing subsystem .GET. This saves about 500 words, but in some cases increases the real time taken. Using ".get" means that the external variable "prm.cr" cannot be used, and that ".uid" cannot be used to change the effective userid.
