Summary of Commands
Below we summarize the most commonly used commands and options
of MAIL8.
- ADvisory
- create an advisory message, displayed to anyone who sends
you mail.
- Alias
- print all your defined aliases.
- Alias +All
- print all defined aliases (personal and system).
- Alias nickname nickname ...
- print real addresses associated with given nicknames.
- CONFiguration
- provide information about how MAIL8 is set up at your
site.
- DONE
- end MAIL8 session.
- Delete
- move Saved message(s) into Deleted drawer.
- Delete +Deleted
- irrevocably delete messages from Deleted drawer.
- Delete +Outbound
- delete (retract) Outbound message(s).
- Delete +Unread
- delete (deny) Unread message(s).
- EXPIRE
- delete messages that have been in the Saved or Outbound
drawer longer than a certain time.
- EXPLain
- give general details about MAIL8.
- EXPLain topic
- explain particular topic. List of topics is obtained with
EXPLain INDEX.
- Follow_up
- add comments to Saved message and return to original
sender. Possible options:
- +All
- send this follow-up message to people in TO: and
CC: lists, in addition to original sender.
- +Answerback
- request immediate answer.
- +Confidential
- make follow-up confidential.
- +Registered
- make follow-up registered.
- BlindCarbonCopies=user
- send copy of follow-up to specified user, without
telling other recipients.
- CarbonCopies=user
- send copy of follow-up to specified user.
- File=filename
- attach file contents to follow-up.
- Subject="string"
- change existing subject line (if any) to new string.
- <filename
- take text of message from the given file instead
of prompting for terminal input.
- Follow_up user user ...
- add comments to Saved message and send to specified
recipients. Same options as above.
- HELP
- display list of all MAIL8 commands.
- MODify
- change Saved message. Possible options:
- +Confidential
- make message confidential.
- -Confidential
- make message non-confidential.
- +Memo
- make normal message into memo.
- -Memo
- make memo into normal message.
- MODify +Outbound
- change Outbound message. Possible options:
- +AnswerBack
- request immediate answer.
- -AnswerBack
- remove request for immediate answer.
- +Confidential
- mark message as confidential.
- -Confidential
- remove confidential characteristic.
- +Registered
- make message registered.
- -Registered
- make message non-registered.
- NewBox userid
- switch to new mailbox. Must have write permission on
given mailbox.

- display current settings of all options that are turned

Alias_Pathname1=filename
- give name of alias file 1. Similar options for alias
files 2 through 6.
- Option +Ask_Subject
- tell MAIL8 it should ask for a Subject line whenever you
send a message.
- Option -Ask_Subject
- tell MAIL8 not to ask for Subject. Subject line is only
added if the sending command explicitly specifies Subject=
option.

- specify command string for invoking editor to edit
messages.
- Option Expire_DAYs=number
- messages in Saved or Outbound drawers expire after given
number of days.

- messages in Saved or Outbound drawers expire after given
number of hours.

- send all messages with Registered characteristic.

- turn off +Register_All.

- specify name to be used to identify sender (in addition
to sender's address).

Undelete_DAYs=number
- messages in Deleted drawer expire after given number of
days.

- messages in Deleted drawer expire after given number of
hours.

Undelete_WeeKs=number
- messages in Deleted drawer expire after given number of
weeks.
- POST filename
- send pre-formatted message to users. Message is stored in
given file. Message must be in exact MAIL8 format.
- Print
- display Saved message. Possible options:
- >file
- copy message into given file, overwriting current
contents.
- >>file
- copy message into given file at end of current
contents.
- Print +Outbound
- display Outbound message. Same options as above.
- Print +Unread
- display Unread message. Same options as above.
- qQuit
- end MAIL8 session.
- ReMail userid
- send existing Outbound message(s) to additional
recipient.
- Reply
- send message to user who sent a particular Saved message.
Same options as Follow_up.
- Reply_Delete
- send message to user who sent a particular Saved message,
then delete original message. Same options as Follow_up.
- STATus
- display number of Unread and Outbound messages. Also
displays number of rejected messages (if any).
- Summary
- summarize one or more Saved messages. Summary gives
sender, time message was sent, and subject of message.
- Summary +Deleted
- summarize one or more Deleted messages. Displays same
information as for Saved message, plus time until message
expires.
- Summary +Unread
- summarize one or more Unread messages.
- Summary +Outbound
- summarize one or more Outbound messages.
- To
- compose and send a message to one or more users. Same
options as Follow_up.
- To userid
- compose and send a message to specified user (and
possibly others, depending on other options). Same
options as Follow_up.
- UnDELete
- move message from Deleted drawer back to Saved drawer.
- UnRead
- convert a Saved message back into an Unread message.
- !command
- invoke a TSS command.
